Why I Use the KJV & Other Bible Translations

Hi Everyone,

Recently, I received a request from a reader to send more puzzles that use only the King James Version of the Bible. This is not the first time such a request has come in and in the past I tried very hard to accommodate that request – AND – WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO. However, I thought it might to interesting to publicly comment on that request. Here is my comment and a little more:

Thank you for your request for more KJV Bible scriptures. There are many, many puzzles that are made from the KJV. There are also many that are made from other translations, such as the NIV, CEV, NLT, AMP, NASB, RSV, TLB and so forth. And, there are many made from a combination of different translations.

Personally, I highly respect the KJV and have found it to be the most authoritative translation available.

However, that are times when the KJV just does not easily express the essential points in the scripture. So therefore, personally, I generally use up to 5 or 6 translations (at the same time) in my own study to get a real good understanding of what a scripture’s deeper meaning is. Generally I look for agreement between the multiple translations to feel confident I have the right (or at least the best) understanding available. I also use the Strongs’ Concordance to get the meanings of the original Greek and Hebrew words when necessary.

Here is an example of where the (King James Version) KJV is lacking and the New International Version (NIV) is more descriptive: Luke 10:19

KJV-Behold, I give unto you power … over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

NIV-I have given you authority … to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Notice that the KJV says “power” where the NIV say “authority.”

Here is example where the KJV out-classes the NIV in Luke 9:55 when Jesus’ disciples wanted to harm a man because he did not give them lodging.

The KJV says: But he [Jesus] turned, and rebuked them, and said, “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.”

But the NIV only says: But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

In this instance the NIV not only omitted a crucial part of what Jesus said, but also because of that omission the essential meaning is potentially lost.

Again, I suggest we compare translations and use the original Hebrew and Greek words to get the best understanding. However, I do not knock anyone who exclusively uses any translation because in the final analysis we have to trust the Holy Spirit who is the author of the Bible, because it is He that will see to it that we get the right understanding for His purposes.

It is the Holy Spirit who will lead us to all truth (John 16:13).

Happy New Year to Everyone!

In 2010 the Lord intends to do great things in and through each of us. In fact, that is true with every year. Jesus said:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12 KJV

So in 2010 we wish everyone well and we pray that you will flourish and prosper in the Lord!

Search the Bible – Strong’s Concordance On-line

We have not started publishing puzzles in 2010 yet, but will begin again soon. In the meantime, I wanted to share with you a Bible searching resource that anyone can use on-line.

Have you ever wondered how some preachers and teachers seem to know so much of the original vocabulary of the Bible. That is, the meaning of the original Hebrew and Greek words that the original writers used and their meanings.

There is a simple put powerful tool that is available to anyone – FREE.

It is called the Strong’s Concordance. It gives and explains the meaning of every word in the Bible – in the original language. This giant book was compiled by Dr. James Strong (and 100 of his colleagues). It took them over 35 years and was completed in 1890.

I use this tool almost every day. I am fascinated by it and it has become invaluable in helping me find scriptures for my own devotions, for my teachings and especially when I make the puzzles for the Bible Word Search books.

I strongly recommend this tool for everyone – and it is now free and online at this website: King James Bible with Strong’s Concordance. This link is also listed to the right under the “SEARCH THE BIBLE” resources.

Of course there are other websites with the concordance on it and we will share some of them with you in later posts. Please try using this website and we will give more information on how to use and the importance of a concordance in future posts.
